In the antiquity, the Egyptians and the Nabatéens (among others) were big consumers of incense. But where come from this invaluable product ?
Boswellia sacra is the scientific name of the tree to incense, tree of the family of Térébinthacées which grows in the South of the Arabian peninsula (current Yemen and Oman) and in the east-point of African (current Somalie)
It gives an aromatic resin which give off, when we burn it, a strong and pleasant smell, the diverse religions of the Middle East and the Mediterranean Basin of which made a big consumption since the antiquity . It is in Dhawfar in Oman that we harvest since millenniums the best quality of resin. Called locally mughur, it grows essentially on the desert tray situated behind mountains, it is in this way except the zone of monsoon, notably in the North of Jabal Qara. We find there also in the valley of Wadi Adawnib in the northwest of Raysut.
Boswellia sacra is a small shrub in the tortured and stunted branches which can achieve until 3 m at the end of 8 or 12 years. It is from this moment when we can harvest his resin. He can live for a long time on the condition of not being for the humidity. There is a male tree ( tay ) and a tree female (golf).
The season of the resin lasts only four months, generally of the middle of the winter at the beginning of the summer. During this period, the trunk of every tree and the bottom of the biggest branches are made an incision for three or four occasions. The number of sections can rise until thirty. The whitish liquid which then flows slowly along trees and sandbank by hardening at the end of approximately three weeks. The translucent drops are then taken in and sorted out according to very strict quality criterion. There are four varieties of resin, which we classify according to their color and to their purity: Hujari, najdi, shazri, shaabi, of the most appreciated to the one who in it less value. The first one which is slightly bluish, is almost transparent. It is which is the main ingredient of the perfume in which intervene vegetable essences as the patchouli, the vétiver, the sandalwood and the animal contributions such the ambergris and the musk.
During the antiquity, the biggest part of the Oman production was concentrated in the warehouses of Sumhuram, the authorities of which controlled entrances and releases. A part of the resin was exported by sea in the direction of northern Oman, of Persia and of Makran. The rest left with big caravan, in the direction of the North-West, towards Mecca, Medina, Pétra, Palmyre, Damascus, or still towards the northeast, towards Bahrayn, Bassorah, Bagdad. This business made the fortune of the region during almost 3000 years and contributed to the greatness and to the power of the realms of Hadhramawt on which depended for a long time Dhawfat.
